ECITB Technical and Craft Training

Technical and craft training courses help employees acquire the skills required by the engineering construction industry. The ECITB works with employers and training providers to develop and deliver a wide range of courses that provide employees with high quality training.

Employees can learn new job-related skills that benefit the industry through technical training. Technical training also helps employees’ career development by enabling progress from semi-skilled to craft status. For the wider industry, technical training helps recruit skilled workers from other sectors; for instance, helping former Services personnel transfer to engineering construction industry roles.

The ECITB supports training programmes across a wide range of disciplines:

  • Abrasive Wheels
  • Appointed Persons – Moving Loads
  • Commercial Awareness
  • Condition Monitoring
  • Confined Space
  • Electrical Installation
  • Electrical Maintenance
  • Flow Measurement
  • High Integrity Welding
  • Human Performance
  • Hydraulic Systems
  • Industrial Drone Operations
  • Instrument & Control
  • Lifting and Positioning
  • Manual Handling
  • Managing Welding Operations
  • Mechanical Fitting
  • Mechanical Joint Integrity
  • Mechanical Maintenance
  • Metal Decking Installation
  • Monitoring Engineering Construction Activities
  • Moving Loads
  • Non Destructive Testing
  • Offshore Decommissioning Awareness
  • Onsite Machining
  • Pipefitting
  • Plating
  • Precision Measurement
  • Pressure Safety Valves
  • Project Controls
  • Root Cause Analysis
  • Small Bore Tubing
  • Steel Erecting
  • Supporting Engineering Construction Activities
  • Supporting Engineering Construction Operations
  • Trayfitting Wind Turbine Blade Repair
  • Wind Turbine Hub Rescue
  • Wire Rope Inspection
  • Welding-Plate
  • Welding-Pipe
  • Working at Height

Approved training courses cover either technical or occupational competences and take between 1 day and 8 weeks to complete.

ECITB training follows a four-stage approach:

Stage 1

Initial off-the-job training at an ECITB-approved centre.

Stage 2

A guided work-based task assignment.

Stage 3

Assessment via an ECITB Technical Test to validate competence.

Stage 4

Tests of technical competence are reassessed every 3 years to check performance.

By using an ECITB-approved provider, employers ensure their workers receive high-quality skills training. At the end of the course, employees get an ECITB certificate of training to prove they have job-specific skills and also understand  safe working practices.
