What is covered by ECITB training grants
Grant support is available for a range of training activities. The ECITB prioritises funding for training that improves the productivity and safety of the engineering construction workforce and also training that develops skills that are transferrable across industry. These include:
Craft/technician skills
(e.g. Mechanical Joint Integrity)
Safety training
(excludes CCNSG Safety Passport)
Leadership, management and supervisory development
Competence assurance
(e.g. vocational qualifications and technical tests)
Contractual requirement
(e.g. works access and plant operations)
Project management, project controls and commercial awareness
Apprenticeship support
Graduate Development Grants
Training courses, such as safety passports required to gain access to sites and to ensure a worker can travel overseas, are excluded from grant support. These include the CCNSG Safety Passport, CSCS, BOSIET and MIST.
Who is eligible for grant support?
All in-scope engineering construction companies are eligible for training grants, whether they pay the training levy or not.
The levy contribution or size of a company has no bearing on the decision to award a grant. Small and medium-sized companies may be exempt from levy payments but are eligible to receive training grants.
The ECITB can also award training grants to employers, training providers, individuals and other institutions that are not in-scope, but are part of the engineering construction industry.

Process for grant funding
The way employers submit grant claims is changing from January 2026.
ECITB Connect Grant will replace the area in the ECITB Membership Services Portal (MSP) where you currently submit grant claims.
The development is part of the ECITB’s drive to improve the user experience for our employers – making grant claims quicker and easier and ensuring high standards of reliability.
Employers should have been invited to training sessions by their Relationship Managers. If you have not yet attended one these sessions please contact your Relationship Manager.
Does the training grant cover the full cost of training?
The grant rate paid by the ECITB is determined by:
- The value for money offered by the training activity
- The training fee levels set by the third-party provider
- The desirability of particular training courses for industry
This means a grant payment may not cover the whole cost of a training course. The ECITB reviews the training market and adjusts grant rates as and when necessary.
