As part of a campaign focusing on health and safety, the ECITB is publishing a series of top tips to help create a better safety culture in the engineering construction industry (ECI).

With health and safety training being one of the key contributors in helping reduce accidents and lost-time incidents on sites, the ECITB’s CCNSG Safety Passport course helps to develop a positive health and safety culture, where safe and healthy working becomes second nature to everyone.

Below are tips from the CCNSG course to help keep you and your colleagues safe.

The importance of housekeeping to industry

To emphasise the crucial role housekeeping plays, Louisa May Alcott, the American author famous for writing Little Women, asserted: “Housekeeping ain’t no joke.”

While the quote is not about working in industry, the importance of housekeeping is just as important in the ECI in keeping everyone safe.

These housekeeping tips are particularly key:

  • Check that the workplace is free from hazards at the beginning of each day.
  • Do not store objects on the floor or in walkways and always return articles to their designated storage point when they are no longer needed.
  • Clear up any spillages immediately.
  • Do not allow objects to stick out into walkways or store them in a way where they might fall.
  • Ensure that waste materials are properly stored and are removed on a regular basis.
  • Ensure that special arrangements are made for the removal of unusual or extra large objects or substances.
  • Do not store articles or substances anywhere other than in the designated areas.
  • Ensure the workplace is tidy and that items and substances have been put away at the end of the shift.

The ECITB plays a vital role in ensuring Britain has workers with the skills industry needs both now and for the future.

This includes the essential health and safety skills and knowledge to keep both workers and their colleagues safe when operating in some of the most hazardous and safety-critical environments in industry.
