Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies to https://www.ecitb.org.uk/, which is run by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB). We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website, with text that should be as simple as possible to understand.

All content is created to meet the WGAG 2.2 accessibility standards, and is made to be compatible with assistive technology. We aim for our website to be:

• available to everyone including those with sight, hearing and motor impairment restrictions
• clear and simple to understand with text that is easy to read and using colour combinations that provide reasonable contrast
• easy to navigate with a coherent and consistent structure

For example, that means you should be able to:

• zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
• navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
• navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
• listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

• 1.4.5 Images of Text
  If the same visual presentation can be made using text alone, an image is not used to present that text.
  Some news articles (e.g. What does a green career look like within the engineering construction industry?) are using images containing text. This image has been replaced.  An audit will be conducted across all website images. Any images identified from this that are overlaid with text will be replaced by March 2026.

Recently addressed issues

• 2.4.7 Focus Visible
  All controls on the page – including links, buttons, and fields – should show when they have been selected by the keyboard.
  The keyboard focus is not visible when it tabs onto the checkbox for ‘I have read and agree to the terms & conditions’. At 200% zoom and more, the keyboard focus is not visible on the back icon at the top of the webpage. This was addressed in December 2025.
• 1.4.4 Resize Text
  Users must be able to magnify the contents of a web page by up to 200%.
  At 200% zoom, the text ‘Your e-mail address’, under ‘Sign up for updates’, becomes cut off and unreadable. This was addressed in December 2025.
• 2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide
  If any part of the content moves, scrolls or blinks for more than 5 seconds, check that there is a mechanism available to pause, stop or hide the content.
  The video at the top of the homepage cannot be paused, stopped or hidden. This was addressed in December 2025.
• 2.4.3 Focus Order
  The order of elements should make sense when browsed by keyboard users, using the tab key to step through items in order.
  At 200% zoom and more, once the hamburger menu icon has been expanded, the keyboard focus does not follow a logical order when tabbing onto links within the menu, such as ‘Search for’ and ‘Professional Development’. In addition, once a navigational dropdown menu has been expanded, the keyboard continues to tab through the rest of the navigational menu instead of tabbing into the new open links. This was addressed in December 2025.
• 2.4.11 Focus Not Obscured (Minimum)
  When selecting a user interface component with the keyboard, the focus indicator must not be completely obscured by anything in front of it.
  At 200% and 400% zoom, when the hamburger menu is open, the keyboard focus can move to the page content behind it if the user tabs away from the menu. This results in the focused element being completely hidden from view. The video ‘pause’ button on the homepage is hidden and unable to be accessed at 200% zoom. This was addressed in December 2025.
• 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context) and 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value
  All link names should be accessible by a screen reader and be descriptive enough to tell a user where that link will take them.
  There is a hidden (or empty) link next to ‘Image credits:’ that does not have accessible text. This was addressed in December 2025.
• 2.4.2 Page Titled
  Each web page should have a meaningful title
  The title is missing within the settings of the PDF document: https://www.ecitb.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/ECITB-QA.pdf. This was addressed and reuploaded in December 2025.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 28th May 2024. It was last reviewed on 22nd December 2025.

This website was last tested on 19th November 2025. The test was carried out by the Government Digital Service, who selected a sample of pages to test. The site was tested using a combination of automated tools and manual testing.

Previous assessments in 2024 were carried out by Cyber Media Solutions, our website provider, who test a sample of pages and different templates on the website, using a combination of automated tools and manual testing. A further accessibility audit is scheduled in January 2026, to complement the review carried out by GDS mentioned above.
