The CCNSG Safety Passport scheme is introducing changes to how card validity is managed to make it more robust and keep safety fresh among workers in industry.
Learners completing the CCNSG two-day national course will continue to be issued cards that are valid for three years.
The changes are in relation to the renewal of safety passports. Workers successfully renewing will no longer receive cards that are valid for three years from the date the old card expired in a move designed to strengthen the scheme’s integrity and security.
Previously, cardholders that renewed early could carry forward unused time up to a maximum of six months before the expiry date. However, analysis of renewal data indicated examples where this process had been misused to gain extra time on a card.
The same analysis showed that the majority of delegates renew their passport within three months of its expiry date.
As a result, and to continue supporting cardholders that renew in good time, a three-month administrative extension is being applied to all card renewals to ensure attendees are not disadvantaged by renewing early, while maintaining the scheme’s three-year renewal cycle.
This means all renewed cards will now be valid for 39 months (three years and three months) from the date of the renewal assessment. It also means that cardholders can now renew at any point.

“The renewal cycle is designed to provide a safety refresher for workers to reduce accidents and lost-time incidents on sites. This is especially important when working on high-hazard sites across the engineering construction industry.”

The change, which came into effect from September 7, forms part of the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board’s (ECITB) launch of its new Creatio online platform, which provides end-to-end learner registration, results and certification, as well as a new certificate and card checker function.
CCNSG must still be renewed regularly, via completing either the one-day renewal course or the test-only renewal route at an approved training provider centre.
Where a card has expired, the cardholder is required to complete the full two-day CCNSG national course. If the cardholder has a genuine reason for being unable to renew before the expiry date (such as a significant medical condition or overseas assignment) they can contact their training provider to request authorisation for a late renewal from ECITB.
Advice for CCNSG cardholders
- Check their CCNSG Safety Passport expiry date.
- Complete renewal training before their card expires.
- Keep their card secure.
- Report lost or damaged cards promptly.
- Be aware that remaining time will no longer be carried forward if they renew more than three months before expiry.
