Qualification summary

The objective of this qualification is to prepare candidates for employment by attaining a range of knowledge, skills and behaviours to support welding within the engineering construction industry.

The qualification is suitable for candidates currently working in, or those interested in entering, the engineering construction industry in the role of welding operative and provides opportunities to progress to the next level of vocational welding qualifications in the industry. It is based on National Occupational Standards (NOS).

Where is this qualification delivered?

To complete this qualification learners must enrol with one of ECITB’s Approved Centres listed below.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no mandatory entry requirements however, due to the level and complexity of the subject, it is recommended that learners should have GCSE grade G/1 or above or Functional Skills Level 1 or above in English (language) and mathematics – or are able to demonstrate evidence of other suitable attainment or experience.

The approved centre will work with the candidate and, where appropriate, employer, to determine the candidate’s suitability for the qualification.

What is the qualification structure?

To achieve this qualification candidates must complete six mandatory units.

It takes the average candidate 420 hours to complete this qualification. This involves 420 hours of time with a teacher, trainer or assessor as the candidate will be supervised throughout the duration of this qualification.

Are there progression opportunities?

Once you have passed your qualification you can progress in a range of career options. These include apprenticeships in engineering construction and associated disciplines and gain employment in these areas.

Completing this qualification can lead to supervisory positions or into supporting functions such as procurement, project management or project controls.

The ECITB’s apprenticeship programme is its main vehicle for recruiting and training young people to meet the future skills requirements of the industry.
