The ECITB has reacted to today’s announcement by Hitachi that the Japanese firm has withdrawn from the planned Wylfa Newydd new nuclear power project on Anglesey.
Chris Claydon, ECITB Chief Executive, expressed his concerns about the UK’s ability to meet net zero targets and also the impact on the local economy.

“Hitachi’s decision to withdraw from development of the proposed Wylfa Newydd nuclear power station on Anglesey is a concerning development both in terms of consequences for energy transition in the UK and for the local economy,” Chris Claydon said.
“Operations through Horizon Nuclear Power Ltd, owned by Hitachi, had already been suspended in January 2019; however, this announcement has potentially serious implications for the UK’s net zero targets and for skilled workers and supply chain companies in North Wales.
“The ECITB helped to co-ordinate the retraining and redeployment of staff at the time of the suspension last year, with a particular focus on apprentices moving to EDF Energy and elsewhere. We will continue to work with our nuclear employers and key partners, including Government to address skills issues arising from any developments around Wylfa Newydd.
“And through the Nuclear Sector Deal, we will continue to explore the opportunities for skills and jobs that could be achieved through an enhanced role for nuclear in a net zero carbon future,” added Chris.
