Matthew is a qualified Non Destructive Testing (NDT) technician and part of the core team at Ineos in Grangemouth.
Matthew first heard about apprenticeships from his careers advisor at school. It was during discussions around what type of job he wanted to do, that the idea of an apprenticeship came up. Matthew said: "I had heard about the training opportunities provided with an apprenticeship and the potential for career progression."
Matthew had considered university, but as he discovered more about apprenticeships, he realised he could have extensive training both on the job and at a learning centre and still earn money. Getting into employment earlier meant there was lots of potential for him to progress in engineering construction quickly.
Part of Matthew's experience as an apprentice involved being sent to Stanlow to work on a shutdown. He said: "It was different from anything I had done before passing my PCN exams, but I knew was capable of working on my own."
One of the best parts of his apprenticeship was being onsite and gaining valuable experience in the different techniques used in NDT.
In the future Matthew would like to further progress his career by studying radiography and using the skills he has acquired overseas.
