The attraction of ongoing learning

Aaron is a fully qualified Non Destructive Testing (NDT) technician who works for Applus RTD and works on a number of Clients sites including Ineos Petrochemical site in Grangemouth, Scotland.  Aaron has continued with his professional development including studying for an HNC in welding, fabrication and inspection, by distance learning from Fife College.

Aaron recognised that an apprenticeship would provide him with the ability to continue his education after school and therefore enhance his future job prospects. He understood that it would be good for his career path to continue his training and gain valuable skills that he could use throughout his life. Additionally, Aaron appreciated that employers would value his willingness to learn, again improving his employment prospects.

Aaron had considered university, but after reading some ECITB literature covering the different kinds of apprenticeships available in the engineering construction industry, he realised that would suit him better, so he sent his CV to the ECITB with a list of his preferred apprenticeships. Aaron was keen on NDT as it was something he had never heard of doing before.

Aaron has found the apprenticeship to be well balanced with his attendance at MetTECH UK Ltd and Forth Valley College in the first year, followed by gaining onsite experience in the following two and a half years. Aaron said, "Gaining on-site experience in NDT with qualified technicians was a great help before undertaking Industry specific PCN exams on each discipline." Aaron is very keen on learning, so much so he would have liked to have had the opportunity of starting his HNC at the end of the second year of his apprenticeship.

Ultrasonic Testing is Aaron's favourite NDT discipline and he would really like to pursue a career in this area once he has completed his HNC.
