The Renewables sector encompasses a range of generation technologies, including wind, solar, wave and tidal and biomass. The 2009 Renewable Energy Directive set a target for the UK to achieve 15% of its energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020 and the trade association RenewableUK predicts there will be up to 105,000 jobs by that year in this sector. In 2015, 11% of UK’s energy came from renewable sources. The UK is still the largest market globally for offshore wind and predictions are that offshore wind alone will provide 10% of UK’s electricity by 2020. The UK market is also leading the way in innovation, including pioneering blade technology, more powerful and taller turbines, and wind farm developments further offshore. A developing sector is offshore wind operations and maintenance, which equates to a quarter of the life-time cost of an offshore windfarm.
