Power generation is a critical sector for the UK. UK power consumption is almost twice as much as the world average, and successive governments have committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, including most recently at the COP Summit in Paris in 2015.
Fossil fuels are still a significant segment of the UK's power supply, but because of environmental impact they are now decreasing. Old power stations based on fossil fuels, such as coal are being phased out, whilst matching supply from other sources, such as nuclear, renewables and new new gas-fired power stations. In the long term Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) may also be an option.
