Glass Works

The UK produces 9% of Europe’s glass and the industry currently employs 90,000 people. 3.6 million tonnes of glass is used annually by the UK. Container glass and flat glass accounts for approximately 90% of glass produced in the UK; the latter is particularly sensitive to economic cycles. Six manufacturers manufacture for the container industry and three for the flat glass industry. The UK is a net importer of glass. 47% of the world’s glass is produced by China.

Glass is 100% recyclable, yet 70% of glass ends up in a landfill site. Glass is an energy-intensive process, but remelting waste glass uses 25% less energy than making glass from raw materials. The industry has worked hard to improve its energy efficiency has halved the energy consumption per tonne of glass. The industry is not a heavy user of water.

Modern architecture will demand greater glass production
