Cement and bricks comprise clay building and precast concrete products. Clay building products are used in construction and include the manufacture of bricks, roof tiles, sewage pipes and rain water cladding systems. Precast concrete is fundamental to both the UK’s construction industry and transportation infrastructure. Cements and concretes also play an important role throughout nuclear industry operations and refractory ceramic bricks are used for lining furnaces, such as those used in steel mills.
The sector employs approximately 42,000 in 2,500 organisations and has an annual turnover of approximately $5.8bn.
The industry is currently facing the challenge of reducing its CO2 emissions as a way of addressing, for example, future scarcity of fossil fuels and taxes and legislation.
