Career Profiles

Now you have probably got a fairly good idea of what engineering construction is, you may actually want to work in the industry. It employs about 100,000 people in a whole variety of jobs worldwide, so there is bound to be something that you would want to do - unless the thought of a fascinating career with the prospect of good pay and foreign travel does not appeal!

The working lifestyle is different to other careers. You usually only work on one project at a time and see it through to completion. As the UK engineering construction industry is very export orientated this could also mean that you could work overseas for a long period of time and then move to a different project on the other side of the world.

The working environment can also vary considerably. You could be working in the desert in the Middle East on one project and then riding out the winter on a North Sea oil platform on the next one. This doesn’t apply to everyone in the industry - nearly half the workforce is head-office-based and makes short visits to project sites. But it doesn’t mean that they aren’t involved just as closely on a project.

Not everyone is an engineer either. There are opportunities for everyone (accountants, market researchers, etc) with any qualification - you just have to find out where you’ll fit best.
