Humber Chemical Brokerage

Yorkshire Forward and Learning and Skills Council Humberside have developed a new approach to support workforce development within the Humber sub-region, by identifying priority clusters and sectors important to the future economic development of the area.  In each of these clusters and sectors a Skills Brokerage has been established, one of which is the Chemical Skills Brokerage.

The objective of the brokerage is to engage employers and employees in ongoing development, achieved by offering information, expertise and support for the development of the workforce.  In addition, the Skills Brokers will signpost employers towards opportunities offered by other initiatives and support agencies.

The Chemicals Skills Brokerage is a partnership between Humber Chemical Focus, ECITB, COGENT, Sector Skills Council and Impress Group Training Association. For instance;

Fabricom had identified a need for a 5-day assessed Pressure Relief Valve Maintenance value refurbishment course, in support of the service they provide to Chemical companies.

A course was developed for mechanical, instrument, process supervisors and technicians which aims to provide candidates with the ability to overhaul, fault find, calibrate and test Pressure Relief Valves utilising the relevant maintenance instructions. It provides ‘hands-on’ training together with a written assessment, with certification awarded on successful completion of the course.

The Chemicals Skills Brokerage in the Humber sub-region are being offered up to 50% funding towards the cost of training, which has prompted Fabricom to increase the number of trainees participating. Companies based and/or working in the Humberside sub-region, involved in the chemical supply chain, should contact Alan Wood, ECITB or Martyn Jones, Chemical Skills Broker. Companies not working in the Humberside sub-region should contact the ECITB to see if similar arrangements exist.
