The Midlands Region has completed a very interesting year. The employers decided to take a fresh look at what our skills challenges were and how the ECITB can assist in delivery. This has yielded some very positive steps.
We established the Water Sector sub-forum to recognise their distinct training needs. This is now being expanded to see if there is sufficient national demand. Elsewhere the employers are looking into collective delivery and we are exploring the potential of collaborative Technical Training delivery.
The welding community has also got together, and started to develop short course content to progress from VQ3 to the more highly complex applications. A pilot delivery commenced in November 2011on Main Steam pipe-work welding with Alstom and Doosan Babcock. More broadly it is good to see the closer engagement with ECITB and the National Skills Academies, as this should lead to a definition of common goals and areas of responsibility, resulting in efficient delivery and impact on the whole sector.

The Big Bang – UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair - takes place at the NEC Birmingham on 15th-17th March.
Skills West Midlands – An Interactive Careers & Skills Event for 15-24 yr olds - takes place at the New Bingley Hall, Birmingham on 21st – 22nd March.
