Plating is the marking out, cutting, forming and joining of metal to repair and maintain assemblies such as tanks and vessels. Platers are skilled in reading drawings, marking out and measuring, preparing templates, cutting and forming plate and structural steel and assembling using lifting equipment before tack welding.

Having been trained in the fundamental skills at a college or training centre, an Apprentice can expect to go on sites such as petrochemical plants, oil refineries and other processing plants and deploy the skills attained during the off-the-job training period, develop them further and gain experience.

Working closely with one or more experienced tradespersons, an Apprentice will draw upon all the skills in reading drawings, marking out and measuring, preparing templates, cutting and forming plate and structural steel and assembling using lifting equipment and then tack welding.
