Energy
The Energy White Paper Meeting the Energy Challenge set out the challenge of securing future energy supplies and reducing carbon emissions. With a third of the UK’s generating capacity coming offline BY 2015, we face a huge task in rebuilding, replacing and commissioning new power stations; presenting a substantial challenge to the skills and supply of the engineering construction industry.
ECITB meeting the Energy challenge
The Energy Skills - Opportunity and Challenge report sets out the Action Plan.
ECITB is planning professional recognition and development for supervisors in the energy and nuclear industries and to improve the supply of project management skills, working with engineering construction companies including Alstom, Doosan Babcock, Siemens and AMEC.
ECITB is also collaborating with Sector Skills Councils, Cogent (the Sector Skills Council for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, nuclear, oil & gas, petroleum & polymers); EU Skills (the Sector Skills Council for the gas, power, waste management and water industries); and The National Skills Academy for Nuclear on key areas.
Oil & Gas
Stocks of UK oil and gas are dwindling and becoming more expensive and difficult to extract, requiring bigger investment and constantly improving technologies - and demanding work skills to match.
ECITB meeting the challenge
The ECITB has launched a major partnership with OPITO (the UK Oil and Gas Academy) to build new products to improve and extend workforce skill sets.
ECITB is also collaborating with Cogent and other sector skills councils to ensure that a sustainable and efficient workforce for plant maintenance is available for the refining sector.
